May 26th, 2025 Meeting

President Dennis Pratt called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM at Kro Bar.

Officers and Directors: Present –  Glen Hill, Courtney Johnson, Ken Lundberg, Dennis Pratt, Mike Sierszen, Dennis Smet, Jeff Stollenwerk, Walt Swanson, Jim Waletzko, Dean Wellman and Ken Zivic.

Minutes of the April Meeting: The minutes as written in the May newsletter were approved following a motion by Dean Wellman, second by Jim Waletzko and unanimous approval by voice vote.

Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s Reports: Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk reported that April’s beginning balance was $20,990.82, and the ending balance was $21,612.11 with the following expenses: Computing Done Right (Professional email account) $180.00 ; Transfer to Savings (March donations) $185.00 ; Katie Thompson (April Newsletter); $200.00 ; DP Reimbursement (Jan 27-Apr 23 expenditures) $35.73.  The Treasurer’s report was approved following a motion by Ken Zivic, second by Ken Lundberg and unanimous approval by voice vote.  Financial Secretary Dean Wellman reported that there were $650.00 in total deposits into the general fund since the last meeting and that the Club had 6 membership renewals and 2 new members. The Financial Secretary’s report was approved following a motion by Ken Lundberg and a second by Mike Sierszen.

Committee Reports

Legislative, Education and Audit Committees: Nothing new to report.

Habitat: Dennis Pratt – We will be assisting DNR with streambank brushing on the Little Brule. Dates chosen are July 26th and August 2nd. We’ll present details in our June and July newsletters and on our website. Today’s visit to Beaupre Springs, more beavers again, tamaracks doing very well, both plantings. Swamp white oak were discussed as a tree to replace the ash trees that have died off.

Scholarship: Mike Sierszen – Mike Sierszen presented the College Scholarship committee’s recommendation, David Gallagher. The recommendation was approved following a motion by Ken Lundberg and a second by Dean Wellman. Wesley Ormston was selected for the Northwestern High School Scholarship by email from Breena Kroll.

Membership: Jim Waletzko and Ken Zivic received this month’s extra newsletters and will be distributing them to prospective members.

Social Media: Dennis Pratt – June newsletter will include spring cleanup, habitat project details and raffle announcement.

Other Business

Fly of the Month – Mike Zicus will do Dick Berge’s hex spinner

Brule Preservation Board Meeting Summary – Ken Lundberg reported that the board approved: 50 percent funding for their Landing Host program again this year; and they are sending us $500 each for both of our Club’s scholarship programs and $500 to the Family Fun Day account.  They are strong supporters of Science on the Fly organization, and they discussed temperature monitoring including information from Cedar Island which goes back decades.

Raffle 2025 Ticket Distribution – We will announce the raffle in the June newsletter and send out a Constant Contact email.

Family Fun Day Discussion – Date chosen is August 16th.
