President Dennis Pratt called the meeting to order at 6:01 PM at Round-Up North in Brule.
Officers and Directors: Present – Ed Chaplinski, Courtney Johnson, Mick Killoren, Ken Lundberg, Dennis Pratt, Mike Sierszen, Dennis Smet, Jeff Stollenwerk, Walt Swanson, Jim Waletzko, Dean Wellman and Mike Zicus.
Minutes of the August Meeting: The minutes as written in the September newsletter were approved following a motion by Ken Lundberg and a second by Courtney Johnson and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s Reports: Financial Secretary Dean Wellman reported that there was one deposit of $360.00 in September into general fund. The Club had 3 new members. The Financial Secretary’s Report was approved following a motion by Jeff Stollenwerk and a second by Dennis Smet. Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk reported that September’s beginning balance was $12,491.05, and the ending balance was $11,170.05 with the following expenses: The First Impression (River Map Printing) ($362.80); Ron Gaare (Habitat Project Lunch) ($156.90); Luke Gregerson (HS Scholarship) ($500.00); Pro Print (Newsletters) ($23.82); Computing Done Right (Annual Web Host) ($279.00); Dennis Pratt (Habitat Project trailer rental; Postage) ($158.48); Katie Thompson (September Newsletter) ($200.00). The Treasurer’s Report was approved following a motion by Jim Waletzko and a second by Ken Lundberg and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Habitat: Dennis Pratt shared some project ideas for next year that the Club could consider. He used his drone to do a fly over of Beaupre Springs and reported the area is still beaver free. Dennis described this year’s project to some new members that came to the meeting.
Legislative: Ken Lundberg – nothing to report.
Scholarship: Mike Zicus, requested clarification of the official name for each scholarship. Brule River Sportsmen’s Club College Scholarship and Northwestern High School Scholarship were approved following a motion by Mike Zicus and a second by Dean Wellman and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Education: Dennis Smet – nothing to report.
Membership: Jim Waletzko – Nothing to report, although he mentioned a couple new members were present for the meeting. Board Members had a discussion around annual ballot presentation, common theme was to work with Constant Contact to make it as simple as possible. Ken Lundberg mentioned 60% open the newsletter within 48 hours and he volunteered to reach out to Constant Contact to see if they can help, Mike and Walt will assist. Renewal discussion – Electronic newsletter will suggest renewing online. Paper newsletter will need to include a paper renewal form and ballot.
Budget: Nothing to report.
Social Media: Mike Zicus/Dennis Pratt – Mike Zicus asked Ron Gaare to find the first college recipient to do a where are they now article. Family Fun Day was mentioned as being the main newsletter article for October. Katie Thompson and Ron Pearson did a great newsletter article on the 17th annual Challenge Center Canoe Trip, volunteers Ken Lundberg, Dean Wellman, and Dennis Smet were present and thanked for their participation.
2020 Great Waters Fly Expo –Ken Lundberg recommends that we continue to attend this. Ken Lundberg made a motion and a second by Mike Sierszen followed with a unanimous approval by voice vote. Ed Chaplinski mentioned that we could think about having a lady’s hat made. Board Members had a discussion around what we could sell at the Expo and around partnering with local Fly shops to produce a package of Brule flies and another about a booklet that talks about when to use certain flies.
Brule River State Forest Request – Dennis Pratt informed the Board that Ranger Station personnel had mentioned that the river map they had went missing so he sent a replacement for posting. This led to a discussion that Ranger Station staff would like to sell our maps at the office. This arrangement was approved following a motion by Mick Killoren and a second by Mike Zicus and unanimous approval by voice vote. Dean will deliver maps to them shortly.
South Shore Grade Update – Dennis Pratt informed the Board that Brule River Preservation was helping town of Brule in some legal matters to help this process along, and we could show support by donating to the Town of Brule. The idea brought forth was to send a check for $1,500.00 to cover legal expenses that the town had incurred and to let them know we are behind them. This was approved following a motion by Ken Lundberg and a second by Mike Sierszen and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Fly of the Month – Dean Wellman mentioned that we could put a fly of month on the web site that would have the insect next to the tied fly, he passed around an example of what this could look like.
Annual membership dues for Wisconsin Wildlife Federation – Ken Lundberg recommended we continue membership. The cost is $110.00, and this was approved following a motion by Mike Zicus and a second by Ken Lundberg and unanimous approval by voice vote.
