President Dennis Pratt emailed the draft meeting notes to board members on March 22nd.
Minutes of the February Meeting: Motion was made to approve by Mike Sierszen, seconded by Mike Zicus and approved by board majority.
Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s Reports: Dennis Pratt submitted the report to the board by email on March 22nd that there were three deposits for a total of $1,852.00 since the last meeting into the general fund and the Club had 4 new members. The Financial Secretary’s Report was approved following a motion by Ron Gaare with a second by Dean Wellman and approved by board majority. Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk reported to the board by email on March 22nd that March ’s beginning balance was $12,679.54, and the ending balance was $12,785.51 with the following expenses: Pro Print (February Newsletter) ($25.13); Katie Thompson (March Newsletter) ($200.00); Dennis Pratt (Postage) ($234.70); Ike’s McCabe Chapter (Earth Day Event) ($250.00) and a transfer to College Scholarship ($1,500.00). The Treasurer’s Report was approved following a motion by Mike Zicus with a second by Courtney Johnson and approval by board majority.
Habitat: Ron Gaare – July 25th and August 1st remain the tentative habitat dates. The planned project is to add 15 yards of ¾ to 1 ½ inch washed gravel to the two wings a short distance upstream of Stone’s Bridge. Not sure when we’ll be able to have our habitat appreciation celebration.
Legislative: The Annual Spring Fish and Wildlife Public Hearing and Wisconsin Conservation Congress (WCC) county voting will be held entirely online this year. The voting website will be active beginning at 7PM on Monday April 13th and remain active for the next 72 hours. Question number 48 is the question that Ken developed regarding restoring salmonid passage to the Iron River.
Scholarship: Mike Sierszen reports that we’ve now received five applications. Application deadline is the end of April.
Education: Dennis Smet – ‘Trout in the School Room’ Program – Dennis Smet and Dennis Pratt visited and made presentations to the four Northwestern Middle School 6th Grade General Science Classes and five Superior Senior High 11th/12th Grade Ecology and Conservation Classes in the first week of March. This year’s program reached approximately 200 students. Trout fry were euthanized at the end of the project.
Membership: Walt Swanson and Mike Zicus worked together to draft a short positive renewal reminder. Pratt sent this to 188 e-newsletter recipients and inserted the renewal reminder in 28 of the paper newsletter recipients who had unpaid dues. We’ve had a fair response thus far.
Budget: The budget committee reviewed the 2019 budget data that was electronically sent to them by Jeff Stollenwerk on March 22nd. The committee approved the report and Jeff sent it on to the entire board. Paul Helbach was concerned that we keep the High School and College scholarships separate. Pratt responded explaining that that separation will be reported in each month’s financial report. This is easily done now that we have separate donation categories on our newsletter renewal forms and on the Club store donation dropdown list. Ken Lundberg made a motion to approve the 2019 budget report, second Mike Sierszen and approval by board majority.
Social Media: Website: A committee made up of Glen Hill, Ken Lundberg, Mike Sierszen, and Mike Zicus has been working on updating/revising the club’s website. They’ve replaced the ‘Scholarship News’ page with an ‘About The Scholarships’ page, providing background for the 2 scholarships (https://bruleriversportsmensclub.com/the-scholarships/). The ‘About the Club’ page (https://bruleriversportsmensclub.com/about-us/the-club/) is partially updated, and the ‘About the River’ page (https://bruleriversportsmensclub.com/about-us/the-river/) has been updated. The ‘Club Calendar’ page also received its monthly updates.
Facebook: Pratt has added quite a few posts on the club’s Facebook page this last month with most having to do with passing along information regarding cancellation/postponements due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
South Shore Grade Update – Nothing new to report.
Fly of the Month – The April newsletter submission is the Wooly Bugger by Ken Lundberg
Update Club Charter – Nothing to report.
Spring Clean-up Cancelled – Pratt canvassed the board and by board majority vote the 2020 Spring Clean-Up has been cancelled. Many of the board members responded that they will be cleaning their typical area anyway sometime this Spring.
