President Dennis Pratt called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM at Round-Up North in Brule.
Officers and Directors: Present: Paul Helbach, Courtney Johnson, Mick Killoren, Ron Pearson, Dennis Pratt, Dennis Smet, Jeff Stollenwerk, Walt Swanson, Jim Waletzko and Dean Wellman.
Minutes of the May Meeting: The minutes as written in the June newsletter were approved following a motion by Jim Waletzko and a second by Courtney Johnson and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s Reports: Financial Secretary Bill Gobin was not present, Jeff Stollenwerk reported in his absence that there was one deposit of $238.00 in June into general fund, and one deposit in Scholarship Savings for $900.00. The Club had 1 new member. The Financial Secretary’s Report was approved following a motion by Dennis Smet and a second by Dean Wellman. Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk reported that June’s beginning balance was $41,505.09, and the ending balance was $40,925.17 with the following expenses: Katie Thompson (May Newsletter) ($200.00); Arrowhead Printing (May Newsletter) ($182.98); Scouts Pack 212 (River Clean-up) ($125.00); Scouts Troop 212 (River Clean-up) ($125.00); National Pen (Ron Gaare order) ($69.94); Joe Scaccia (May Meeting) ($50.00); Transfer to Saving for SS Grade Project ($65.00). Outstanding Checks and Scheduled Payments: WDNR South Shore Grade Project ($29,000.00); Katie Thompson (June Newsletter) ($200.00); Arrowhead Printing (June Newsletter) ($183.00); Joe Scaccia (June Meeting) ($50.00). The Treasurer’s Report was approved following a motion by Walt Swanson and a second by Jim Waletzko and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Habitat: Dennis Pratt went to three meetings this past month representing the Club; Brule River Preservation, DNR and International Char Symposium which was held at Clemmer’s Barn in Brule.
Legislative: Ken Lundberg – Lake Superior Fish Management Plan outline, please review/Ken needs our input for July 20th deadline for commenting. At the time of the meeting a few board members have reviewed the plan.
Scholarship: Paul Helbach – 2018 scholarship committee selection, reviewed the 5 Applications that were received. This year’s recipient selected by the committee is Kendall Hill. The selection received a motion by Dean Wellman and a second by Courtney Johnson and unanimous approval by voice vote. A recommendation was made to move $646.69 from the general fund to cover the shortage in the scholarship this year, this received a motion by Jim Waletzko and a second by Dean Wellman and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Education: Dennis Smet – Dennis has been running the aquarium projects for 18 years and has been part of the board since 1990, the Club recognized all his work for the Club and award Dennis a plaque.
Membership: Jim Waletzko reported we have 381 members.
Budget: Ron Pearson – no report.
Social Media: Mike Zicus – Mike wasn’t present however the Club store is very close to be ready for use, more testing is needed.
Search for new Financial Secretary – Bill Gobin will step down in January
Challenge Center Canoe Trip – Ron Pearson will be contacting paddlers from past years for this event.
South Shore Grade Update – Dennis Pratt (Construction window, must start by Aug 1st – Sept 15th) The committee uncovered a small snag, Brule Preservation paid for title search, and turns out it belongs to the railroad at this time. Canadian National Railroad must give permission for the project to begin. At the time of the meeting we are short $20,747 of the total needed. Pending grants are still a possibility, as there is still no word on the DNR grant request from the USFWS.
Mary and Ed Chaplinski donation – hand crafted table with a Cypress Spruce top and Yellow Birch legs, Ed said it takes 5 years to get the pieces ready and had it priced at $1,800.00. Lots of discussion on how to handle the ticket sales to make sure we get a target dollar amount for this wonderful donation. Paul Helbach said the Lions Club will meet tomorrow and he will attend, he informed the Club that this year Brule Veterans Memorial fund raising was part of the Lions Club Event. Dean Wellman suggested to support the Brule Veterans Memorial with this donation, this received a motion by Paul Helbach and a second by Jim Waletzko and unanimous approval by voice vote.

Brule Lions Club Chicken Barbeque – August 12th, Brule Pavilion, 11am to 3pm
Trout Habitat @ Stone’s Bridge – August 18th and August 25th, 9am to Noon each day
4th Annual LSSA Brule River Spey Day – September 8th at McNeil’s, 11am to 3pm
