Vice President Ken Lundberg called the meeting to order at 6:05 PM at Round-Up North in Brule.
Officers and Directors: Present – Bill Gobin, Paul Helbach, Courtney Johnson, Ken Lundberg, Ron Pearson, Jeff Stollenwerk, Walt Swanson, Dean Wellman and Mike Zicus.
Minutes of the June Meeting: The minutes as written in the July newsletter were approved following a motion by Bill Gobin and a second by Dean Wellman and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s Reports: Financial Secretary Bill Gobin reported that there were two deposits of $240.00 in July into general fund. The Club had 4 new members. The Financial Secretary’s Report was approved following a motion by Dean Wellman and a second by Mike Zicus. Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk reported that July’s beginning balance was $40,925.17, and the ending balance was $40,741.43 with the following expenses: Katie Thompson (June Newsletter) ($200.00); Paul Helbach (Scholarship printing) ($23.74); Katie Thompson (July Newsletter) ($200.00). Outstanding Checks and Scheduled Payments: WDNR South Shore Grade Project ($29,000.00); Arrowhead Printing (June Newsletter) ($183.01); Joe Scaccia (June & July Meetings) ($100.00). The Treasurer’s Report was approved following a motion by Walt Swanson and a second by Bill Gobin and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Habitat: Ron Gaare – Ron was not present, however the dates for the habitat are set. We may need some canoes to get to the sites where the work will be done.
Legislative: Ken Lundberg – nothing to report.
Scholarship: Paul Helbach – Kendall Hill, this year recipient was present during the meeting. He has been a club member for many years. He expressed thanks to the club for his selection. Kendall is currently pursuing his degree in Civil Engineering, Kendall explained how important the design work that he does is necessary to keep sediment out of the streams. He is an Eagle Scout and is active with cross county. At a recent Cross-Country event which had 11 cross country teams he was awarded for having the highest-grade point average, which currently is a 4.0 average. The scholarship has been given out since 1999.
Education: Dennis Smet – no report.
Membership: Bill Gobin – reported we have 369 members.
Budget: Ron Pearson – no report.
Social Media: Mike Zicus – online store is up and running. PayPal account took a little more work than originally thought. Wendy was awesome to make this happen. So far, the Club has a couple of new members and a couple of merchandise orders paid for using PayPal.
Search for new Financial Secretary – Bill Gobin will step down in January, we need to start recruiting soon to have overlap. Ideally, this position has a need for a person that lives close to Brule to manage the Post Office Box.
Challenge Center Canoe Trip – Ron Pearson, August 11th has been selected the trip date, at this time he has 8 volunteers and 6 canoes. Lunch has been lined up. Ron says that the event can have up to ten participants at most. Volunteers need to meet in front of Twin Gables at 9:00am, August 11th.
South Shore Grade Update – Lundberg met with Paul Piszczek, Mike Spencer, Dave Zentner and Jane Anklam. Ownership issues have been uncovered and must be resolved before the project can begin. The Club has been informed that we will not get the grant the grant from the National Fish Passage Program under the GLRI, which makes us about $25,000 short of the total estimate at this time. Dean mentioned the situation at the site is not getting better. Brule River Preservation, the Club, and Wisconsin DNR are preparing a joint letter to go out to all donors and sponsors. The letter will explain where we are in the process and what the plans going forward are.
Mary and Ed Chaplinski donation update – Mary and Ed Chaplinski brought the table up for the meeting and delivered it to Paul Helbach. The Lions Club and Veterans Memorial will be handling the raffle tickets sales. Several local businesses will assist in getting the word out about this. Proceeds will go towards the Veterans Memorial.

Brule Lions Club Chicken Barbeque – August 12th, Brule Pavilion, 11am to ??pm, Duck race to follow at the Kro Bar.
Trout Habitat @ Stone’s Bridge – August 18th and August 25th, 9am to Noon each day
4th Annual LSSA Brule River Spey Day – September 8th at McNeil’s, 11am to 3pm.
