President Dennis Pratt called the meeting to order at 6:04 PM at Round-Up North in Brule.
Officers and Directors: Present – Ron Gaare, Bill Gobin, Paul Helbach, Courtney Johnson, Ken Lundberg, Dennis Pratt, Dennis Smet, Jeff Stollenwerk, Walt Swanson and Mike Zicus.
Minutes of the November Meeting: The minutes as written in the December-January newsletter were approved following a motion by Ken Lundberg and a second by Bill Gobin and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s Reports: Financial Secretary Bill Gobin reported that there were numerous deposits from membership renewals and donations for the South Shore Grade Project in December-January. The Club had 3 new members. The Financial Secretary’s Report was approved following a motion by Jeff Stollenwerk and a second by Dennis Smet. Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk reported that December’s beginning balance was $6,134.54, and January’s ending balance was $10,442.35 with the following expenses: Katie Thompson (January Newsletter) for $200.00; Joe Scaccia (November Meeting) for $50.00; Arrowhead Printing (Ballots & Envelopes) for $203.00; Arrowhead Printing (Mailing) for $97.37; Arrowhead Printing (November Newsletter) for $230.79; Post Office Box for $116.00; Bill Gobin (Postage) for $116.53; Debit Adjustments (Bank initiated corrections) for $49.50. Outstanding Checks and Scheduled Payments: Joe Scaccia (January meeting) for $50.00. The Treasurer’s Report was approved following a motion by Dennis Smet and a second by Ron Gaare and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Habitat: Dennis Pratt – Maintenance of spawning areas from Stone’s bridge downstream to Mott’s Ravine has been recommended as the 2018 habitat project. Mott’s Ravine is in the worst shape and project will likely start there and move upstream towards Stone’s bridge.
Legislative: Ken Lundberg – nothing to report.
Scholarship: Paul Helbach – Paul will be reminding educators that have been supportive to have students apply. Applications are due back at end of April. Paul is also working on the High School Scholarship at Northwestern High School and the $500 scholarship will be funded by the Brule River Shillelaghs sales.
Education: Dennis Smet – Aquarium Project update: the eggs have hatched into fry and have yet to begin feeding at both Superior and Northwestern. Dennis Smet was not sure of the status at Hayward. Visit will be scheduled with the schools to answer questions from the students.
Membership: Bill Gobin – 161-member renewals requested email only, 58 requested paper only. A suggestion was made to review the membership list and drop off members that have not renewed in the last 12 months. This was followed by a motion by Mike Zicus and a second by Ken Lundberg and unanimous approval by voice vote. Ken Lundberg will help Bill clean up the list.
Budget: Nothing to Report, Financial officers will meet in March.
Social Media: Mike Zicus – the website has two new posted video links, the 2017 Challenge Center Trip and 1999 habitat work. Facebook has five new videos, 995 followers, from 45 counties and the one day viewing peak was just under 13,000 views.
Officer Election Results – voting was close to unanimous, all officers were voted back in.
South Shore Grade Update – Funding continues to come in through several different sources. However, we are not finished yet, we want to thank all that have donated so far.
Digital Newsletter Project Progress – Ken Lundberg reported that 50% of newsletters are opened/read immediately and a total of 60% are opened/read within the month. Ken has deleted 45 undeliverable accounts and 37 accounts have never opened any newsletters since the project started. Ken also suggested that the vendor, Constant Contact, be setup as auto pay.
Lake Superior Fisheries Management Plan (https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/fishing/lakesuperior/LakeSuperiorFishManagementPlan.html) – Ken Lundberg informed the club that the last meeting was canceled. Please follow the link above for the most current information.
Expo Discussion – All is ready for this event. The Club could use additional knowledgeable volunteers down there.
