April 25th, 2022 Meeting

President Dennis Pratt called the meeting to order at 6:02 PM at Brule Town Hall.

Officers and Directors: Present: Ed Chaplinski, Glen Hill, Courtney Johnson, Mick Killoren, Ken Lundberg, Dennis Pratt, Mike Sierszen, Dennis Smet, Jeff Stollenwerk, Walt Swanson, Jim Waletzko, Dean Wellman, and Ken Zivic.

Minutes of the March Meeting: The minutes as written in the April newsletter were approved following a motion by Dennis Smet and a second by Ken Lundberg and unanimous approval by voice vote.

Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s Reports: Dennis Pratt reported for Financial Secretary Dean Wellman that there were deposits for a total of $435.00 since the last meeting into the general fund and the Club had 5 new members. The Club sold 34 lower river maps, 33 upper river maps and 1 poster. Donations to the various funds: General – $131.00 and Habitat – $10.00, Education – $10.00, NW High School Scholarship – $10.00 and College Scholarship – $10.00. The Financial Secretary’s Report was approved following a motion by Glen Hill and a second by Ed Chaplinski. Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk reported that April’s beginning balance was $35,505.31, and the ending balance was $30,179.51 with the following expenses: Dennis Pratt (Mailings, supplies) ($235.30); Wisconsin Division of Gambling (Raffle License) ($25.50).  Also, Jeff reports that $5,500.00 in donations were transferred to Savings. The Treasurer’s Report was approved following a motion by Dean Wellman and a second by Courtney Johnson and unanimous approval by voice vote.

Committee Reports

Habitat: Dennis Pratt – Tree planting project at Beaupre Springs is planned for May 14th.  Meet at the Upper St Croix Boat launch at 9AM.  Lunch will be provided. Dennis Pratt made a motion to spend up to $500 to purchase habitat supplies. Mike Sierszen made a second followed by unanimous approval by voice vote.

Legislative: Ken Lundberg – Wisconsin Wildlife Federation Banquet was last Thursday at Barker’s Island, and three Board Members were present.

Scholarship: Mike Sierszen – We have received 4 of applications at this time. Mike feels that we will be receiving more before the deadline.

Education: Dennis Smet – Lori Danz from Superior High School was awarded the 2022 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Teacher Fellowship award.  Teacher Fellowship recipients are educators who have been chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, their ability to motivate others, and their leadership and service within and outside the classroom.  Dennis Pratt made a motion to replace the damaged Aquarium at Northwestern Middle School. Dennis Smet made a second followed by unanimous approval by voice vote.

Membership: Jim Waletzko – Jim is getting paper copies of the Newsletter into the hands of people he meets that appear interested in joining the Club.

Budget: Jeff Stollenwerk reported that the suggestion was made during the audit to have multiple signers on bank accounts. Dennis Smet made a motion to follow the guidance. Walt Swanson made a second followed by unanimous approval by voice vote. This was followed by a discussion on renewing CD’s. Several options were brought up. Suggestion was to renew for 11 months and revisit next year. Ken Lundberg made a motion to renew for 11 months and revisit next year. Dean Wellman made a second followed by unanimous approval by voice vote.

Social Media: Mike Zicus/Dennis Pratt – Dennis reported 4 new Facebook posts last month. Dennis also mentioned that Mike has been doing an excellent job handling the inquiries that come in through the website.

Other Business

Meeting Location – Brule Town Hall was chosen as a preferred location, and donation was discussed. A motion was made by Ken Lundberg to utilize the Brule Town Hall with a $50 donation per month and a second by Jim Waletzko followed by unanimous approval by voice vote.

Spring Cleanup Dates – The boy scouts (about 30 of them) will be cleaning up the Brule River on Saturday, April 30th – inclement date of May 21st. Cub Scouts (about 30 with their parents) will be cleaning the campground, ranger station, and wayside on May 14th. Dennis Pratt will pick up the rolls at Super One. Dennis Smet will bring coffee and bags. Dennis Smet talked to Sheri at Twin Gables about a lunch. For less than $200, we can get 4 buckets of chicken (48 pieces), mashed potatoes, coleslaw and breadsticks, and soda for $1.  We can gather in her backroom or on their deck.

Fly of the Month – Damian Wilmot is tying a Grey Ghost Bunny variant for May.

South Shore Grade Update – Dennis Smet reported that Myron Olson said the work was out for bid.

Private Property Awareness Issue – Dean Wellman – The Committee plans on meeting before the end of May.

Club constitution/bylaws revisions – Board Members were asked to review once again. Two areas needed additional clarification.

Reel Recovery Project Proposal – Ken Zivic – asked again if we had someone to suggest.

 2022 Family Fun Day – The various Douglas County clubs plan on holding the event again this year. The tentative date is August 20 with more information to follow.
