President Dennis Pratt called the meeting to order at 6:03 PM at Round-Up North in Brule.
Officers and Directors: Present – Dennis Pratt, Bill Gobin, Walt Swanson, Jeff Stollenwerk, Paul Helbach, Courtney Johnson, Mick Killoren, Mike Zicus, Dennis Smet, and Ron Pearson.
Minutes of the May 22 Meeting: The minutes as written in the June newsletter were approved following a motion by Bill Gobin and a second by Mike Zicus and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s Reports: Financial Secretary Bill Gobin reported that there were three deposits totaling $652.00 since May 22 into general fund. The Financial Secretary’s Report was approved following a motion by Jeff Stollenwerk and a second by Walt Swanson. Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk reported that June’s beginning balance was $8,352.06, and the ending balance was $8,184.73 with the following expenses: Arrowhead Printing (April & May Newsletters) for $494.33; Boy Scout Troop 212 (Spring Clean-up) for $125.00; Katie Thompson (June Newsletter) for $200.00. Outstanding Checks and Scheduled Payments: Joe Scaccia (June Meeting) for $50.00; Bill Gobin (postage) for $8.33. The Treasurer’s Report was approved following a motion by Dennis Smet and a second by Bill Gobin and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Habitat: Dennis Pratt – Dennis re-visited the upper 3 tributaries, however on the West Fork Dennis reported a series of four beaver impoundments. A call was made to the APHIS trapper and the Beaver/dams were removed. DNR Fisheries has decided to re-visit our first project on the Little Brule for this year’s habitat project (see below for dates and times). The intent is to remove streamside alder which can tip into the stream. Dennis commented how conifers will replace the tag alder over time. The Club is hoping in the future years to re-visit some of the gravel projects completed in the past.
Legislative: Bill Gobin reported that the aquaculture and fish farms bill (Wisconsin Senate Bill 95) was approved.
Scholarship: Paul Helbach – The committee recommended that the scholarship be awarded to Logan Sikora. This received unanimous approval by voice vote.
Education: Dennis Smet – Nothing to report.
Membership: No report.
Budget: Ron Pearson – General, Education and Scholarship Funds are all in good standing.
Social Media – Mike Zicus/Dennis Pratt – Winneboujou Club is developing a new procedure to access Big Lake. The Winneboujou Club has requested that we place a link to their access pass application on our page. Mike Zicus mocked up a webpage post announcing the new process and is waiting for approval from the Winneboujou Club before he posts it. Our Facebook page had 5 new items and has 182 followers. New items for the Newsletter – habitat dates, Facebook announcement, Brule Coalition meeting, and walking sticks availability. Discussion around the idea of having a Club Twitter account followed.
South-Shore Grade on Nebagamon Creek Issue – Dennis Pratt – An update from Paul Piszczek indicated that a proposal for funds has been submitted to the EPA. Aaron has met with USFWS and their staff also recognizes the problems. Project has a good head of steam and will continue to take the shape of an organized project for 2018 hopefully.
Email of newsletter to Members Project Progress – Ken Lundberg – without Ken being present this was deferred to next month.
Brule Preservation Annual Meeting – Dennis Pratt – The research done on preliminary Preservation properties indicated that the age of some red pine goes back 245 years. In those early years, the forest experienced fire every 10 -15 years. The lack of fires in the last 100 years has shifted the forest back to fir and hardwoods.
Lake Superior Fisheries Management Planning Process – Dennis Pratt – meeting was tonight. The Club will pass along any relevant information when received.

June Trout Unlimited Meeting – Representative from My Lake Superior Northwoods discussed their private landowner project which is helping landowners connect with resource specialists on proper land management strategies.
