President Dennis Pratt called the meeting to order at 6:01 p.m. at Round-Up North in Brule.
Officers and Directors: Present – Dennis Pratt, Ken Lundberg, Bill Gobin, Jeff Stollenwerk, Paul Helbach, Courtney Johnson, Mike Zicus, Dennis Smet, and Ron Pearson.
Minutes of the January 23 Meeting: The minutes as written in the February newsletter was approved following a motion by Ken Lundberg and a second by Bill Gobin.
Financial Secretary’s Report: Financial Secretary Bill Gobin reported that there were deposits of $2,358.00 in February into general fund and 435.00 to the Scholarship Fund. Report approved following a motion by Jeff Stollenwerk and a second by Ken Lundberg.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk reported that February’s beginning balance was $6,970.58, and the ending balance was $7,991.13 with the following expenses: Newsletter editor for 400.00 – January and February newsletters; Arrowhead Printing for $915.55 for November and January newsletters and ballot printing/mailing; Bill Gobin (Postage and Shipping) for $21.90. The report was approved following a motion by Bill Gobin and a second by Courtney Johnson.
Habitat: Dennis Pratt – No project set yet for this summer. Dennis visited the East Fork, West Fork and Beaupre Springs tributaries last week finding no beaver present. Trout and salmon fry were just beginning to emerge from the gravel on the East Fork and at least one pair of steelhead had spawned there already. Dennis also finished an initial version video on the ‘History of Trout Habitat Work by the Club’ covering projects from 1979 to 2016.
Legislative: Ken Lundberg – A range of items were discussed regarding DNR re-organization see state budget website for updates on this issue.
Scholarship: Paul Helbach – Scholarships flyers have been sent out to 11 different colleges and universities, application deadline is April 30. Paul requested that we put a short article in the newsletter regarding the sale of his walking sticks at Twin Gables where all proceeds from the sale goes directly into the Scholarship fund. This was approved after a motion by Ken Lundberg with a second by Bill Gobin. Potential future high school scholarship is tabled to a future meeting.
Education: Dennis Smet –Dennis Smet talked with both Northwestern and Superior and reported that the trout aquariums at both schools are functioning well and the fry are healthy. Both he and Dennis Pratt will be visiting all the classes late next week to make presentations to the students.
Membership: Jim Waletzko – no report.
Budget: Ron Pearson – Ron will be meeting with Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk next month to review the budget and will report back at next month’s meeting.
Web Page: Mike Zicus – Mike has updated the club calendar with upcoming dates of interest.
Spring Clean-up: The date for this year’s spring clean-up was set on Saturday, April 22 with a backup date on April 29. Need to put a notice in the March and April newsletters. Ken Lundberg and Dennis Smet will approach the Scout Troops as to their help in the clean-up.
South-Shore Grade on Nebagamon Creek Issue: Ken Lundberg reported that the DNR will not be able to develop a project to remove the longstanding threat to the Brule until 2018. Ken Lundberg will develop a resolution for club officer approval to take to the next Wisconsin Wildlife Federation meeting.
Email of newsletter to members: Ken Lundberg contacted the company called ‘Constant Contact’ and has emailed the information to the officers and board. Cost would be about twenty dollars per month. It was suggested that we test this by sending the email version through this process while continuing to mail the paper newsletter to test response. The club approved a motion by Ken Lundberg with a second by Mike Zicus to proceed with the emailed project. Ken will report back on progress next month.
2017 Expo Preparation: Ken Lundberg brought the large map (poster size) for this year’s booth display which was wonderfully framed by club member Charlie Bergsten. Ken will be gathering the other materials needed for the booth he will be manning with Courtney Johnson and Dean Wellman.
Brule Coalition Planning: Meeting is being planned with a tentative date – June 29, Nebagamon Town Hall
Brule News of Interest: The board thanked club member Susie Isaksen for sending out her ‘Brule News of Interest’. It was a wonderful synopsis of the various issues at both the state and local level.
Brule Forest Master Plan Update: There was a general discussion of some of the plans various actions. Comments can be made online until March 20.
