Brule River Sportsmen’s Club Regular Meeting
February 22, 2016
President Dennis Pratt called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. at Round-Up North in Brule.
Officers and Directors Present: Dennis Pratt, Ken Lundberg, Jeff Stollenwerk, Ron Gaare, Courtney Johnson, Ron Pearson, Dennis Smet, and Mike Zicus.
Minutes of the January 25 Meeting: The minutes as written in the February newsletter were approved following a motion by Ken Lundberg and second by Dennis Smet.
Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s Reports : Treasurer Ron Gaare reported that February’s beginning balance was $5152.91 (corrected with additional deposits to January report), bills paid totaled $1,224.39, deposits totaled $419.00 and the ending balance was $4347.52. The Treasurer’s Report was approved.
Habitat: Paul Piszczek, Senior Fisheries Biologist, will attend the March meeting and discuss a potential habitat project for 2016.
Legislative: Ken Lundberg discussed state legislation under consideration (SB 734) that affects a pedestrian’s right to cross a railroad track. From the Wisconsin State Legislature web page: “Under current law, with certain exceptions, no person may enter or remain on railroad tracks. The prohibition does not apply, among other things, to the use of public highways or to a person driving across a railroad from one part of the person’s land to another. This bill provides that the prohibition on entering or remaining on railroad tracks does not apply to a person walking directly across the tracks or right-of-way of a railroad.” While this is not a significant issue in the Brule River area, sportsmen around the state have interest in the legislation as it may affect accessibility to fishing and hunting areas.
Ken Lundberg also noted that the proposed state legislation that would weaken regulatory controls for fish farms was substantially changed and no longer significantly objectionable so an opposition letter was not sent as discussed at the January meeting.
Scholarship: No report.
Education: Dennis Smet reported that he and Dennis Pratt plan to visit the Superior and Northwestern schools during the week of March 7 to talk about the aquarium projects and the connection to spawning habitat work that the club has completed in the Brule River.
Membership: No report.
Budget: Ron Pearson reported that the Budget Committee will meet soon and plans to present information at the March meeting.
Web Site: Mike Zicus reported the he has been incorporating Dennis Pratt’s videos and pictures into the club’s web page. Members are encouraged to check out the updated web page frequently and direct any suggestions to Mike Zicus.
