President Dennis Pratt called the meeting to order at 6:06 p.m. at Round-Up North in Brule.
Officers and Directors: Present – Dennis Pratt, Ken Lundberg, Bill Gobin, Walt Swanson, Paul Helbach, Courtney Johnson, Mike Zicus, Dean Wellman and Ron Gaare.
Minutes of the October 24 Meeting: The minutes as written in the December-January newsletter were approved following a motion by Ken Lundberg, a second by Dean Wellman, and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s Reports: Financial Secretary Bill Gobin reported that there were deposits of $8,252.00 in December-January into general fund. Bill Gobin mentioned the increased cost of shipping maps; a suggestion was made to add a shipping cost of $5.00 to members. This was approved following a motion by Mike Zicus and a second by Ken Lundberg.
Financial Secretary Bill Gobin reported for Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk that December’s beginning balance was $883.74, and the ending balance was $6,970.58 with the following expenses: Dennis Smet (Aquarium) for $59.99; USPS (PO Box Annual Fee) for $110.00; Wisconsin Wildlife Federation Dues for $125.00; Bill Gobin (Postage and Shipping) for $145.17; MN Trout Unlimited for $350.00. The treasurer’s report was approved following a motion by Ken Lundberg and a second by Dean Wellman and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Habitat: Dennis Pratt – nothing to report.
Legislative: Ken Lundberg – Wisconsin Wildlife Federation urges residents to contact their legislators to discuss their rights to cross railroad tracks onto public lands and would like the support of sportsmen across the state. Dennis Pratt sent a letter to Cathy Stepp, Secretary of the Wisconsin DNR concerning our position to not allow additional commercial fishing in Wisconsin’s western waters on the rumor that Red Cliff is looking for docking space in the Superior Harbor for a commercial fishing boat.
Scholarship: Paul Helbach – Scholarships flyers will go out one week later than planned to 11 different colleges and universities, application deadline is April 30. A suggestion was made to request a minimum of two letters of recommendation from either professors or former employers; this was unanimous approved by voice vote. Paul Helbach is considering the possibility of doing something scholarship-wise at the high school level and will report back next month on this.
Education: Dennis Smet – Dennis Pratt reported that Dennis Smet talked with both Northwestern and Superior; the eggs had hatched and fry were beginning to feed.
Membership: Jim Waletzko – no report. Bill Gobin reported we have 492 members.
Budget: Ron Pearson – no report.
Web Page: Mike Zicus – Draft page ready on South-Shore Grade issue.
South-Shore Grade on Nebagamon Creek Issue: DNR is in the process of project based planning for fiscal 2018-2019. Their project proposal is to remove the collapsed concrete wing walls first and then to remove the entire grade. This problem has existed for at least two decades. Dennis Pratt will send a letter to all local clubs requesting support for this project when it’s needed. Voice vote unanimously approved this action following a motion by Ken Lundberg and a second by Dean Wellman.
Email of newsletter to members: Ken Lundberg says this is still in process. Moved to February. Greggar Isaksen suggested considering a company called ‘Constant Contact’.
2017 Expo Preparation: Ken Lundberg said that he has asked a local contact to make a display case for the large map for this year’s booth display. Ken Lundberg requested electricity in the booth for a video loop display. Dean Wellman has a large screen on which to show the video. A price board with verified prices in a small frame is also needed. Dean Wellman has a supply of past newsletters for handouts.
Brule Hatchery 90th Anniversary Event (to be held as part of the hatchery’s ‘Family Fun Day’) – Bill Gobin is inviting the previous managers of the hatchery. Dean Wellman volunteered to supply the food; however, we need additional volunteers for the event. It was suggested that we request Justin Howland for a fish carving to be displayed at the event.
