President Dennis Pratt called the meeting to order at 6:03 PM at Round-Up North in Brule.
Officers and Directors: Present – Dennis Pratt, Bill Gobin, Walt Swanson, Jeff Stollenwerk, Paul Helbach, Courtney Johnson, Mick Killoren, Mike Zicus, Dennis Smet, Jim Waletzko, Ron Gaare and Ron Pearson.
Minutes of the July 24 Meeting: The minutes as written in the August newsletter were approved following a motion by Bill Gobin and a second by Mike Zicus and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Treasurer’s and Financial Secretary’s Reports: Financial Secretary Bill Gobin had no report. Treasurer Jeff Stollenwerk reported that August’s beginning balance was $ 7,550.26, and the ending balance was $ 7,186.46 with the following expenses: Arrowhead Printing (July Newsletter) for $163.80; Katie Thompson (August Newsletter) for $200.00; Logan Sikora (2017 Scholarship) for $5.000.00. Outstanding Checks and Scheduled Payments: Joe Scaccia (July and August meetings) for $100.00; Arrowhead Printing (August Newsletter) for ($229.81); Arrowhead Printing (July Invoice Correction) for ($90.00). The Treasurer’s Report was approved following a motion by Dennis Smet and a second by Courtney Johnson and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Habitat: Dennis Pratt – 2017 Habitat Project Report, went very well. Most volunteers came both days. Second day was better because of chainsaws. Ron Gaare brought Sloppy Joes on the second Saturday. A motion was made by Jim Waletzko to cover Ron’s cost and a second by Bill Gobin and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Legislative: Ken Lundberg – nothing to report.
Scholarship: Paul Helbach – good exposure from the press, State Senator Janet Bewley sent a note thanking the Club for consistently encouraging students to pursue careers in Natural Resources. In November, the Club will discuss criteria for choosing a Scholarship recipient in the future, and if the Club will support students at the high school level.
Education: Dennis Smet – nothing to report.
Membership: Jim Waletzko – nothing to report.
Budget: Ron Pearson – Ron thanked both Jeff Stollenwerk and Bill Gobin for all their work.
Web Page: Mike Zicus/Dennis Pratt –Dennis mentioned the Club had 283 followers on Facebook, Dennis is adding notices for events from other local Clubs as well. The 2017 Habitat video from the second Saturday reached 1,073 accounts and was played 486 times. Items posted this month include, the Scholarship Award and the Challenge Center video which was played 130 times.
South Shore Grade Update – 2018 EPA Grant Proposal Fails. Jim Waletzko asked Dennis Pratt if the Douglas Country Fish and Game League knows. Dennis believes that Ken Lundberg has been in contact. The Club will draft letters to our sister Clubs to keep them informed.
Email of newsletter to Members Project Progress – Information to be put together for September’s meeting.
Brule River Roundtable Meeting – The cost was $10.00 to attend, there were 60 attendees. Summary results will be coming. South Shore Grade and Old Highway 2 were topics of discussion.
15th Challenge Center Canoe Trip Report – Ron Pearson – 10 consumers from the Challenge Center attended. According to Ron, most would like to come next year. DNR provided the canoes and Bob Banks provided the landing. 30 people at the lunch, weather was great and no one got wet.
Open House at the Iron River National Fish Hatchery Sept 16th – Ken asked Courtney Johnson to mention that we need at least six volunteers for this event.
Lake Superior Fisheries Management Plan – Representative (Ken Lundberg) and Alternate (Dennis Pratt) selections were approved following a motion by Mike Zicus and a second by Dennis Smet and unanimous approval by voice vote.
Lake Trout Season Closure – Wisconsin Region 2, this area is to the East of Bark Point.
Mouth of the Brule –The landing is closed because of erosion. This may become an issue in the future.
